Like the title says, what the heck is vegan sugar??? Please enlighten me. I was vegetarian and one-day-per-week vegan for three years and am clueless.

Update: 9/13/09 11:26 am: Elisa says cane sugar is often refined through charcoal made from animal bones and sends this link to read more:  http://www.vegsource.com/jo/qa/qasugar.htm

I didn’t realize you could do this on Flickr.  Scroll over the mushrooms to see the type.  I knew 5 out of 6.  How many can you name?

Food Safety and Good Eats

April 16, 2009

So, admittedly, I have been a bit of a Alton Brown fan-girl lately, but I caught this episode of Good Eats on food safety the other night and thought it was something everyone could benefit from watching. It’s called “Fowl Territory” and although Alton does give an interesting recipe for Cornish hens, the main topic of the show is avoiding food-borne illness through the four C’s:

  • Contain
  • Clean
  • Cook
  • Chill

Alton even goes over how to check that your supermarket is following good food safety practices.

For food safety information, I usually visit King County public health website, which has an excellent page on food safety in your home kitchen.

Coming up on Building Blocks Show

February 23, 2009

I know you all haven’t heard from us in a while, but I assure you we are working hard on the next shows. We have taped an episode on Sunday Gravy, an Italian red sauce, and we just shot an episode on making lard and biscuits. I want to make sure the recipes are absolutely delicious for all of you, so we have a bit more work to do before we can post these shows.
